The Oral Proficiency Interview: How does it measure a level of speech?

Whether you are a newcomer to the K-16 world language teacher community or a seasoned professional, this event will introduce OPI concepts and techniques as well as serve as a refresher for those with existing knowledge of the exam. Through specific examples of activities designed to raise levels of speech as well as live interviews, teachers will gain a deeper understanding of how to move students effectively through the proficiency levels.

Jay Duhl has been teaching Spanish for 20 years at Parsippany High School, where he serves as advisor to the Spanish Honor Society and is the organizer of the student exchange program between PHS and Palencia, Spain. Jay earned his BA in Spanish at Rutgers-New Brunswick, and he holds a Masters of Arts degree in Spanish from Middlebury College. He is also president of the New Jersey chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Jay is the co-author of the textbook "AP Test Prep: Mastering the Spanish Language Exam" (EMC Publishing). He also serves as a reader/trainer/supervisor of the AP Spanish Exam Reading for the College Board and he is an AP Consultant, presenting Spanish Language & Culture workshops nationwide for the College Board.
Jay has been an ACTFL certified Oral Proficiency Interviewer (OPI) since 2002, and he regularly conducts and rates interviews of academic, government and commercial candidates for ACTFL, as well as the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) in both Spanish and English.
